Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier: Ready for a transformed world

Blogpost in the name of Rolf Nafziger, Senior Vice President Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier

The global pandemic has completely changed our lives, and it will continue to affect the way we live and work for a long time to come. With so many working at home or using social media, at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, we saw volumes of internet traffic significantly increase compared to pre-corona times. However, we quickly noticed that our powerful platform would be able to cope with these amounts, and even up to double the amount of normal traffic.

Despite the surge in use, we have been able to provide our clients with uninterrupted, quality service. This was achieved thanks to our robust international infrastructure, the emergency plans we put into action, and the decisions we took over the last few years to make substantial technological investments. Together, they made it possible for us to quickly deal with the difficulties caused by the network strain.

After news about Covid-19 in China made the headlines, we immediately developed working groups to ensure business continuity. Measures were developed to secure our infrastructures by monitoring traffic, analyzing data and proactively addressing capacity bottlenecks.

We also provided our partners with special offers to help their customers meet higher demand. Those included interventions such as deferment of existing orders or quick capacity upgrades.

The coronavirus has had the added effect of making businesses more aware than ever of the need for digitalization. Many organizations swiftly adopted digital technology to ensure their ability to continue working. Those that still have not are now feeling the associated drawbacks, and are clamoring to update their operations. As an industry, we need to be ready for this development, because with more digitalization, there will be more need for security.
Luckily, at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier, we already have a vast portfolio of safety and fraud-fighting solutions.

This year, our 360° Defense Strategy has added another DDoS safeguarding service, which we call DDoS Platinum. This is the first time a service of this type has been found on the market. It eliminates the need for on-premise hardware, making it extremely cost effective and scalable while able to mitigate massive attacks.

Democracy and digitization need each other

An article by Adel Al-Saleh, Member of the Board of Management Deutsche Telekom AG and CEO of T-Systems, and Jürgen Müller, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Board member of SAP SE.
The criticism of the Corona warning app is a legitimate means of democratic expression, but in this case it misses the point: We need to have a debate about individual social responsibility. And, through maximum transparency, strengthen our society's trust in the constructive power of digitization.

Several thousand spectators took part via livestream. Customers and the media are now familiar with our new offerings. Digital events are undoubtedly part of our new future.

Telekom donates 10,000 smartphones to retirement and nursing homes

Deutsche Telekom has been helping those unable to meet with family members in nursing and retirement homes by donating smartphones. All in all, Telekom has so far delivered 10,000 phones with a free data volume of 10 GB for the symbolic price of just one Euro each. The campaign began after a ban was announced on visits to many of these facilities, where a large number of the elderly do not own devices capable of making video calls. Now they are again able to see their loved ones!

Fighting the coronavirus pandemic – as volunteers

At Deutsche Telekom, we’re proud of our employees who have often gone beyond the call of duty to make sure our business and networks are kept up and running during these challenging times. Several of our people do even more, by volunteering their off-business hours to help others. One is Martin Stiebitz, who is now helping set up field hospitals and outpatient clinics. Another is Clemens Schulz, a member of a volunteer fire department. Thanks to you both and all who donate their time!

An unusual workplace: Stefan Keller is working from the bucket of a turnable ladder...

Deutsche Telekom helps emergency personnel and patients

In March, with the coronavirus spreading quickly, a field hospital was ready for set up in Neustadt, Germany. The necessary equipment had arrived, but one thing was missing: stable telco connectivity. Telekom was called in to install a mobile base station that would guarantee reliable communications, a vital prerequisite for emergency responders as well as a compassionate one for patients only able to communicate with loved ones virtually. The work was accomplished in a record-breaking five days.

With swarm data against infection

The only way to flatten the infection curve of the coronavirus is for everyone to keep their distance from others. It’s important to keep the number of infected at a level that hospitals can manage without being overwhelmed. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is analyzing movement flows of the public via data that comes from signaling data. The aim is to predict the spread of the virus and thus help to save lives.

RKI uses the data to understand if people are keeping apart from others of if they are gathering in larger groups. And if they are, where are they doing so? See how Telekom is helping.

Telekom supports Robert Koch Institute (RKI) with predicting Corona

Deutsche Telekom has provided the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) with anonymized data from its mobile communications network. The information will be used to research the spread of Covid-19 by mapping movement streams across the nation. No details can be obtained about specific users or anyone infected with the virus as no tracking of individuals is allowed. The process of transferring the data was developed by German data protection authorities together with Telekom.
